Flow around a Hot Brake Disc

The German company Bergische Achsen Kommanditgesellschaft wanted a computational investigation of the characteristics of the flow field surrounding the hot brake disc place inside a wheel of a truck. The flow was modeled around the whole truck due to the influence of the form on the flow upstream from the wheel.

The complex geometry of the inner parts of the wheel and the high computational requirements provided a good challenge.

Work included:

• Computing flow field around and inside the brake disc
• Computing temperature and heat transfer coefficient distributions
• Full truck taken into account in computations for correct boundary conditions
• Rotating wheel, rim and moving ground
