Ice Stadium in Essen

Although the tent roof of the ice stadium in Essen, Germany, is relatively simple, wind force evaluation should be performed because of its large size.  The effect of the three peaks on each other also makes the wind force investigations especially interesting.

The aim of the investigation was to determine the wind force distribution on the tent roof, in order to confirm the accuracy of the stress analysis and design process.

Work included:

• 1:60-as model scale
• Variable installation of pressure measurement points to measure internal and external pressure
• 60 measurement points
• Numerical simulation of wind forces resulted in pressure distributions agreed quite well with measured ones
