Fire Propagation in the Budapest Sportsarena

When designing communal buildings with high seating capacity, it is important to consider effective fire evacuation systems.  Since the previous Budapest Sportsarena was completely destroyed in a fire, there was increased emphasis on fire safety.

In the project, a model fire was implemented in a numerical simulation. The location and the intensity of this fire were determined according to the requirements of the evacuation system for the current fire safety laws. The effectiveness of the smoke ventilation system was examined in order to guarantee adequate air quality for the audience until the evacuation is completed.

Work included:

  • Simultaneous implementation of a 2 and 3 dimension simulation model
  • Modeling of fire as both a heat and carbon-dioxide source
  • Propagation velocity of constant boundary layer
  • Constant intensity of fire in space and time
  • Exponentially increasing source term
