Ventilation of Office Buildings

The design of ventilation systems for offices raises a number of technical challenges related to fluid mechanics. The performance of a ventilation system is strongly related to the number, size and allocation of the intake nozzle units. Through appropriate investigations, it is possible to assure the heat and air velocity comfort of people working in the office.  The system can also be optimised to avoid intake air leaving the room through hydrodynamic shortcuts without executing its desired effect. To support the design, a 3D numerical simulation of the flow was carried out, which allowed different ventilation system configurations to be examined in terms of air flow characteristics such as temperature, velocity, and moisture.

Work included:

  • Displaying the path of intake air with consideration of residence time
  • Testing different configuration to obtain optimal ventilation (Altering the velocity and direction of air, and the size, number and allocation of air intake nozzles)
  • Accurate modeling of air flow conditions in complicated spaces
