During the steel manufacturing process with a converter technology a large amount of hot crude iron is split on a great amount of waste steel. The process is accompanied by intensive emission of hot tracer gas. Exhaustion of this gas is fairly complicated due to lack of space in the installation environment. A further challenge arises from the unsteady flow of the charge, with impulses differing from the continuous load by orders of magnitude.
This project was aimed at the optimization of the suction hood and ventilation through a detailed investigation of the evolved flow. In this case, CFD results were validated by means of model experiments.
