Pharmaceutical Fermenter

A pharmaceutical fermenter must be designed to adequately introduce and mix the nutrients and oxygen necessary for the development of bacteria. It is crucial to introduce sufficient oxygen without introducing an excess resulting in a high level of sheer stress in the mixture, damaging the bacteria.

The aim of the investigation was to detect the critical places concerning oxygen supply, and to optimise the method of air introduction.

Work included:

• Consideration of two phase flow (gas and liquid)
• Simultaneous implementation of  2 and 3 dimension flow models
• Inclusion of the moving mixing vane into the model
• Calculation of the mechanical load
